The OlD library
The first Yardleyvile Library Company was established in the year 1845. The librarian was named Samuel Slack with a pay of $1.00. The library was right over Mr Slack's store which is where the Continental Tavern is today.
The Old Afton Library in Yardley, PA, has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. The library was established in 1906, following a donation of $10,000 by Mrs. Mary Afton.
The original building, which still stands today, was completed in 1908 and was designed by architect Herbert L. Plumb. The library was built in the Colonial Revival style and featured a central entrance with a pedimented portico and columns.
For many years, the Old Afton Library served as the only public library in Yardley and the surrounding communities. It provided a vital resource for education and cultural enrichment, especially during the early part of the 20th century when public education was not yet universal.
In the 1960s, the library underwent a major renovation and expansion, which doubled its size and modernized its facilities. The renovation was made possible by a generous donation from the Twining family, who had been long-time supporters of the library.
Over the years, the Old Afton Library has continued to play an important role in the community. It has hosted countless events and programs, including author readings, book clubs, and educational workshops. It has also served as a gathering place for local residents, providing a comfortable and welcoming space for socializing and community engagement.
In recent years, the Old Afton Library has faced some challenges due to funding issues and changing trends in library usage. In 2019, the library board announced that it would be closing its doors and transferring its collection to the newly built Lower Makefield Township Community Center. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the transfer was delayed, and the library remained open on a limited basis until the end of 2020.
Today, the Old Afton Library building remains a beloved landmark in Yardley, serving as a reminder of the town's rich history and the important role that libraries have played in shaping our communities
